Audience
Teams responsible for long-held material that predates current tooling.

The workflow
01
Input
A historical store, a set of legacy exports, or both, often with incomplete documentation about how they were produced.
02
Acquisition and preservation
NERVE creates explicit source and acquisition context for material that arrived without it, then preserves the originals. What is unknown is recorded as unknown rather than filled with a plausible default.
03
Transformation
Common canonical records are derived where the structure supports it. GenericRecord carries the structure faithfully where no specialised family genuinely fits.
04
Discovery and retrieval
A corpus inventory shows what is held, what has been mapped and what is still identified but unprocessed, so onboarding progress is visible rather than assumed.
05
Governance
Handling rules are applied at the dataset level as material is onboarded, which is frequently the first time a consistent rule has been attached to these holdings.
When it goes wrong
Failure variant
An unknown format is encountered. It is identified, retained and reported under policy rather than silently discarded, and remains eligible for a later processing campaign.
What this does not claim
Derived records are a projection of the original. The original stays authoritative, and improving extraction never changes what was accepted.
Evaluation measures
Corpus inventory completeness
Fidelity of derived records against originals
Extension preservation for unmapped fields
Progressive reprocessing coverage
Storage overhead against retained volume
